More model informationGypsum is a hydrous calcium sulphate mineral with the formula CaSO₄•2(H₂O). As you can see from the many scratches on the surface, it is quite soft (H=2) and can be scratched with a fingernail. It also has a high transparency. Three cleavage orientations are present. The perfect cleaga orientation forms much of the srface of this specimen which has been broken into a thin sheet along this cleavage. The sides of the specimen are bounded by two less well formed cleavages refered to as ‘splintery’ and conchoidal respectively. These are labelled with annotations.
Gypsum can occur in a variety of forms inlcluding this gypsum rose.
