Old Halfeti was a historic settlement located on the banks of the Euphrates River. In the 1990s, with the construction of the Atatürk Dam, the water level of the dam reservoir rose, leading to the submergence of a large part of Old Halfeti. This situation necessitated the relocation of the settlement. New Halfeti was built a few kilometers away from the old settlement, on higher ground. The submerged structures of Old Halfeti, particularly the mosque, houses, and other historical buildings, occasionally become visible above the water’s surface. This phenomenon adds a mystical atmosphere to the region and attracts the interest of visitors. Rumkale, or Rum Castle, is a historical site located very close to Halfeti. Built on a high rocky outcrop above the Euphrates River, this castle has a history that dates back to the Roman period. Due to its strategic location, it has been used by many civilizations throughout history.
