More model informationHalite is the naturally occurring form of common table salt (NaCl). It is typically occurs as evaporite deposits (e.g. in salt lakes), which is where this specimen comes from. Halite crystals are cubic and have a cubic cleavage - both of which are difficult to spot in this specimen as it is an aggregate of smaller crystals. However, cubic shapes can be seen by virue of the subtle colour variations present. The reddish colour in the groundmass is likely due to the presence of red halophile bacteria, a common feature of salt lakes. Halite is quite soft (2.5), is hygroscopic, and also tastes salty.
