Sewing machines were first brought to Japan as a gift from Commodore Matthew C. Perry’s fleet when it arrived in Japan in 1854. In the Meiji era, demand for mass production of military uniforms led to the full-scale use of imported sewing machines. Although domestically produced machines were exhibited at the Second National Industrial Exhibition in 1881, mass production did not begin until the Taisho era (1912-1926).
