This monumental head by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (Fuendetodos, 1746-Bordeaux, 1828), the work of the sculptor Juan Cristóbal, stems from an initial sketch made by the artist for the Seville International Exhibition of 1931. It was installed in June 1933 between the two hermitages of San Antonio de la Florida, next to the Manzanares River, but, badly deteriorated during the civil war, it was removed to the warehouses of the Town Hall. Later, already restored, it would be placed in 1967 on a slope of the Parque del Oeste, next to the Paseo de Rosales, rejoining in 1978 the roundabout of San Antonio de la Florida; Finally, it would be replaced in this place, in 1986, by a seated bronze statue of the painter, the work of José Llaneces, so that of Juan Cristóbal was moved to its current location in the San Isidro park, where it remains after such an ostentatious urban journey, always linked to Goyesque landscapes.
