Роман был написан Робертом Штильмарком в заключении по заказу лагерного авторитета Василевского, который хотел выдать рукопись за свою и подарить ее Сталину в обмен на освобождение из лагеря. План не удался, но первое издание книги вышло под двумя фамилиями.

The novel was written by its author Robert Shtilmark in GULAG camp by order of the criminal authority Vasilevsky, who wanted to pass off the manuscript as his own and give it to Stalin in exchange for release from the camp. Though plan did not work, the first edition of the book appeared with 2 names of the authors.
