Frank Cotton acquires a strange black box adorned with gold filigree when purchasing it from a merchant in Morocco. Back at home, in an empty room, in a ritual he manipulates the box, which turns out to be a riddle that, when solved, allows strange creatures called cenobites to enter our world. Frank dies torn to pieces by chains, hooks and hooks that dig into his skin and end up dismembering him, while the creatures take the box and return to their world.
