Henrietta Marie Hinge 1986.008.2095b3D Model
The form of an iron hinge from the wreck of the London-based slave ship Henrietta Marie is cast of resin using the natural mold of calcareous concretion that formed around the now deteriorated original. Henrietta Marie sank near Key West in 1700, during a voyage from Jamaica to England. The T-shaped hinge is 40 centimeters long and 23.5 centimeters wide. It is pierced with multiple fastener holes, with remnants of some nails surviving. Remains of the wood the piece was once attached to also survive. It is possible that this large hinge was attached to a gunport lid, but really it could have been associated with any door-like device on the ship.
