More model informationThis encrusted, iron hinge comes from the wreck of the London-based slave ship Henrietta Marie, sunk near Key West in 1700. The piece is 42 centimeters long by 25 cm at the widest. This hinge is presented here exactly as it was found on the sea floor, covered with marine encrustation – a mixture of calcium carbonate, rust, sand, and bits of shells and coral. With proper conservation, the hinge’s original form will be revealed.
