In this fragmentary sculpture, Hermes (Mercury) carries a ram to a sacrifice. In ancient Greek cult practice, kriophoros, or “ram-bearers”, were figures that commemorated the sacrifice of a ram. The sculptural type became Hermes Kriophoros, Hermes Ram-bearer.
