Miinatyyppi otettiin käyttöön Venäjällä vuonna 1912. M/12 on määrättyyn syvyyteen vedenpaineen vaikutuksesta asettuva miina. Miinan räjäyttää heilurikoneisto, joka käynnistyy, kun miina osuu aluksen kylkeen riittävällä voimalla. Sotien välisenä aikana malli kuului Suomen merivoimien keskeisimpään miinakalustoon. Toisessa maailmansodassa niitä käytettiin väylien ja rannikkoalueiden turvaamiseen.

The mine type was introduced in Russia in 1912. M/12 is a mine set at the prescribed depth due to water pressure. The mine is detonated by a pendulum mechanism that starts when the mine hits the side of the ship with sufficient force. During the interwar period the model was one of the most important mine stock of the Finnish Navy. In World War II, they were used to secure the sea routes and coastal areas.
