The depiction refers to the legend of the dragon slayer George, who frees the country from a tyrannical dragon if the people allow themselves to be baptized in return. This legend emerged in the 12th century and is recorded in the medieval text collection Legenda aurea. The sculpture is part of St. George’s Fountain and is located in the courtyard of the Primate’s Palace, once the residence of the archbishop.
