Representation of Saint Isaac on the baroque Stations of the Cross of Holy Cross. The saint carries the sacrificial wood on which he will later lie, without knowing it. Abraham is instructed by God to sacrifice his son Isaac, according to the Hebrew Bible. Before the sacrifice can be completed, a messenger sent by God interrupts Abraham after Isaac is chained to an altar and declares, “Now I know you fear God.” Instead of Isaac, Abraham sacrifices a ram after looking up and discovering it. Inspired in Christian tradition by the Abraham-Christ typology, the term Sacrifice of Isaac is rarely used in recent literature. The story has undergone numerous interpretations in Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
