Leopold III, called the Saint, the Mild or the Pious (1073-1136), from the House of Babenberg was margrave of the March of Pannonia from 1095 to 1136. A saint of the Roman Catholic Church since 1485, he became the patron saint of Austria in general and of Vienna and Lower Austria in particular. On January 6, 1485, Leopold was canonized by Pope Innocent VIII; Leopold’s memorial day is November 15. In 1663, under the reign of his namesake Emperor Leopold I, St. Leopold was elevated to the patron saint of Austria in place of St. Koloman.
The statue of St. Leopold is located on the baroque Stations of the Cross in Heiligenkreuz. The sandstone figures there were made from 1731.
