The Statue of Saint John of Nepomuk in Girm, part of the municipality of Deutschkreutz in Burgenland, is a Baroque wayside monument dating from the 18th century. An inscription on the pedestal records the year 1749, while additional dates refer to later alterations and restorations. The original founder and sculptor are unknown.
Saint John of Nepomuk was a Bohemian priest who died in Prague in 1393 and later became one of the most widely venerated saints in Central Europe. He is traditionally regarded as a protector against floods and other dangers associated with water, which is why statues of him are often found near bridges, streams and wells. The monument in Girm may likewise be connected with the historical risk of flooding in the area.
The saint is shown in characteristic clerical dress and with the five stars associated with his traditional iconography. Today, the monument forms part of the historic religious heritage of Girm and Deutschkreutz.
