St. Peter is one of the most important Catholic saints and is considered the patron saint of the popes as well as the cities of Rome, Trier, Regensburg, Worms, Bremen and Posen. Worldwide, like St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, numerous places (St. Peter’s) and churches (St. Peter’s Church) are named after Peter. Peter is believed to be the doorkeeper of heaven. This refers to the biblical saying of the “keys to the kingdom of heaven,” which also form his saintly attribute: With his keys, he is imagined as the gatekeeper of heaven, rejecting or admitting the knocking souls of the departed. In popular belief, he is also held responsible for the weather, especially rainy weather.
