Statue of Saint Teresa at the Baroque Way of the Cross in Heiligenkreuz Abbey. The figure, dating from the first half of the 18th century, was created by Josef Schnitzer.
Saint Teresa of Ávila (1515–1582) was a Spanish mystic, Carmelite nun, and Doctor of the Church. She is considered one of the most important figures in Catholic mysticism and played a key role in the reform of the Carmelite Order. Teresa experienced profound mystical visions and wrote important spiritual works such as “The Interior Castle.”
Her attribute is the arrow – it symbolizes the wound of love inflicted by God, as she describes in one of her most famous visions: an angel pierced her heart with a fiery arrow, which she perceived as a sign of divine love and union with God.
