Beagle was a Cherokee-class ship of the British Royal Navy, famous for carrying the naturalist Charles Darwin in the journey that inspired the theory of the Origin of Species. The ship was launched on 11 May 1820 at the Woolwich dockyard, but left unused until, five years later, was refitted to became a surveying unit by changing its original brig-sloop rig, with 2 masts, to a barque rig with the addition of the mizzen mast.
