HMS Colossus Multibeam Sonar Survey 3D Model
In April 2017 a multibeam sonar survey of the designated historic wrecks in Scilly was undertaken on behalf of Historic England. The wrecks surveyed included HMS Colossus, shown here.
This model shows multibeam data represented as a 3D surface. We have annotated a few examples of the features revealed by this type of survey method. Click on the annotations to find out about some of the archaeological features of the wreck. Follow the links to the HMS Colossus website if you wish to read more in-depth information.
Multibeam sonar is a method for mapping the seabed. An array of sound pulses sent from the survey vessel measure the depth of the seabed. This can produce a quick and accurate 3D map of the seabed and any wreckage lying on it. This must then be interpreted by archaeologists.
