Alum Bay is on the North Coast of the west isle of Wight, near the Needles. This area has been rife with shipwrecks, as the area is geologically hazardous and plays a key role in acess to the ports of Southampton and Portsmouth. This site is also know as the HMS Pomone, a 38-gun 5th rate Leda-class frigate, built for the Royal Navy in 1805. This vessel operated in the English Channel and was sent to the Mediterannean in 1808. In 1811 upon its’ return to Portsmouth, the HMS Pomone hit Goose Rock at the western end of the Needles and was left rudderless, stranded on the rocks. All passengers and crew were rescued. In 1991 the Maritime Archaeology Trust was alerted to this vessel’s prescence, and it has been monitored since. This model is part of the ongoing archaeological monitoring for this vessel and others of archaeological interest.
