QC started training pupil teachers back in the late nineteenth century, and constructed a free-standing two-storey Normal Room at the southwest corner of the campus (junction of Staunton and Shing Wong Streets) in 1910. The red-brick structure had Chinese roof tiles and colonial-style verandahs, and was connected to the main building with a covered walkway. At the beginning, its upper floor was allocated to pupil teachers, and lower floor to the tuck shop, where dim sums, soft drinks and ice-creams were sold. They were converted to chemistry and physics laboratory in 1921 and 1913 respectively. The building thus became the Science Block.
