Pottery, Athens (Greece), Late Geometric I, ca. 740 BC, [inv. 3535]
We know little of administrative structure in the early Greek period, but before the 7th century BC there seems to have been a largely oligarchic system. Oligarchy means that power was held by a small group of men of high (hereditary) military and economic status. These aristocrats were able to afford armour and sometimes even horses. At the time, the horse was the prime symbol of wealth and status. The owner associates himself with exclusive circles by means of the horses on this pyxis.
