“Hospitality of the Nez Perce” by Doug Hyde in Boise, Idaho.
This sculpture depicts Lewis and Clark (tricorn and skin-hat, respectfully) speaking with Nez Perce chief, Twisted Hair, while his son, Lawyer, explores at their feet. This relationship formed with the Nes Perce ensured the success and survival of the ‘Corps of Discovery’ but did not secure the future for the Nez Perce. A generation later, a series of made-and-broken treaties in the midwest, and “the Nez Perce flight of 1877,” saw the official exile of the Nes Perce from the region and eventually the establishment of a Nes Perce, Colville and Umatilla reserves in 1885.
This model was recorded in haste on the last day of my trip as the sun was going down. It was ‘spur of the moment’ and is ‘rough’ due to lack of control or formal collection planning.
Collected during the Reality Capture Network (RCN) 2023 Conference.
