More model informationA Howell-Jolly body is an erythrocyte inclusion. While erythrocytes should be anuclear, some may retain DNA fragments of a nucleuslike that seen here. On the peripheral blood smear, they appear as a typically single, darkly staining inclusion.
Normally, the spleen will filter this type of cell. If they are seen in the blood smear, they are indicative of decreased splenic function or normally seen after a splenectomy procedure.
