Human skull recovered in 2010 by specialists from ÁRKA during an archaeological survey of the remains of the Chilean corvette Esmeralda, a Historical Monument. This steam fighting ship sunk in Iquique in 1879 after a heroic fight under command of Captain Prat against the Peruvian monitor Huascar. The forensic study conducted by Universidad de Chile anthropologists concluded that the skeletal remains belong to a young male individual, 20 to 30 years old, exhibiting morphological features compatible with the Chilean mixed-race population. Health and way of life indicators are consistent with characteristics expected to be found on crewmen serving on board 19th-century Chilean warships as Esmeralda participating on the War of the Pacific (1879-1883).
