Triosephosphate isomerase (TPI) is an essential enzyme that is required for the catabolism of DHAP and a net yield of ATP from anaerobic metabolism. The physiological role of TPI is to adjust the equilibrium between the reversible interconversion of dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P). TPI has been found in nearly every organism searched for the enzyme, including mammals, insects, fungi, plants, and bacteria.
