Winchester Archaeology Group are undertaking a community Archaeology excavation at Hurst Down on the National Trust Hinton Ampner Estate. The research work is part of a larger landscape recovery project across the estate and the archaeology is helping inform land management chocies.

The excavation is focused on the site of two known Bronze Age Barrows believe to be lost to the plough.

Trench 1 runs north-south exploring the southern end of https://heritagerecords.nationaltrust.org.uk/HBSMR/MonRecord.aspx?uid=MNA154548

The trench shows the Barrow ditch cut into chalk geology and a truncated barrow mound that hasn’t been completely lost to the plough due to centuries of hillwash soil builing up against the mound.

Trench 1 - North Extension explores the northern end of the same Barrow: https://skfb.ly/pDtAs
