A group of three standing horizontal water mills and the footings of another, along with associated mill streams, footbridges and a dam. From the dam at the Loch of Huxter the steam falls about 25 metres in height down to the sea over a distance of almost 300 metres. The great change in height allowed for multiple mills in a short distance. These mills date from the 19th century or earlier and were last used in the 1940s. Water is directed onto one side of a horizontal paddled water wheel, this was connected by a shaft though the floor of the mill house directly to a single pair of millstones above. Although inefficient compared to vertical wheels, these horizontal mills were simple to build and maintain.
Restoration work was carried out in the 1980s and 2009, which has helped with how good the site still looks today.
