SUI 152251
Hyracodon nebrascensis
HORIZ: sand pit, glacial till?
LOC: 4 mi south of Sioux Center, IA
DONOR: Jerry Wiekamp 7/1/25
ID: William S.
REM: John Doershuk received this specimen at lake Okoboji where he was teaching an archaeology class, and turned it over to the repository recently. I started working on this as a side project when the academic year started. This is the first fossil I have personally prepared and the second I have entered into the SUI database. I had to dig this and another mandible (associated) out of matrix similar to that of the White River Formation in western NE, SD, and eastern WY. It was a challenge to do without any air-abrasives, but the matrix was soft enough for manual removal with dental tools. I found the likely location where it was found, and if my ID and location are correct, this will be the furthest east a Hyracodon nebraskensis fossil has been found! (excluding one found in Georgia)
