Impression of this enchanting place underneath Breiðamerkurjökull, Iceland. Due to the nature of the crystal-clear ice - being able to see up to several metres inside - photoscanning was not an option to achieve workable results. Instead, it’s a quick base mesh, sculpted in ZBrush predominantely with the ‘Trim Adaptive’ brush, to achieve a convincing ‘melted’ effect, after some initial scultping of cracks and crevices. Using Sketchfab’s internal refractive material option and a second mesh shell behind the first, it aims to give an ice-like appearance.
As a fun fact, by the time the ice reaches the bottom of the glacier, it’s been compacting for over a thousand years. Over the summertime, glacial river streams shape these tunnels, which get melted further by the influence of the sunlight. This is why it’s possible to visit this breathtaking place during the cold season only. If you’re lucky, the winter sun will just about reach and dance around the cathedral-like ceiling of this awe-inspiring natural wonder.
