Immuno-T - T-cell 3D Model
The T-cells detects the signals broadcast by the cancer cells. It recognises the cancer cell from the foreign proteins it carries. However, some cancer cells can absorb these foreign proteins, allowing the cancer cell to disguise itself as a healthy cell.
Fortunately science has found a solution: CAR T-cell therapy. The T-cells are extracted from the patient’s body and genetically modified in the lab. In the lab a genetic code is implanted for a new kind of receptor: the CAR (Chimeric antigen receptor). Thanks to thoses new receptors they can now identify the disguised cancer cells.
The CAR makes the T-cell stronger. As a result, the cancer cells are destroyed very efficiently. The CAR T-cells will sometimes also attack healthy cells that exhibit characteristics that are similar to the cancer cells.
