While the maker of this magic lantern is unknown, it bears a striking resemblance to the kinds of tin projectors produced by Carpenter and Westley, a London-based company, between 1823 and 1850. A faded date on the lantern’s objective indicates that this lantern was made between 1872 and 1874.
The 3D model was built by Katie Chapman and Tassie Gniady of CyberDH at Indiana University. For Shining Lights, a digital-born dissertation about Victorian missionaries who used projection equipment while traveling abroad, including David Livingstone. Annotations by Mary Borgo Ton.
