More model informationThe remaining 440 million tons of lignite in the open-pit mine Inden, North Rhine-Westphalia, are extracted using Bucket-wheel excavators. Lignite originated from extensive forests and peatlands that developed in the Lower Rhine Bight between 30 and 5 million years ago. The lignite is transported on conveyor belts to the nearby Weisweiler power plant. With CO2 emissions of 18.1 million metric tons, this power plant produced the fifth-highest greenhouse gas emissions of all European power plants in 2015. The diverted section of the Inde River runs around the mine as a reclaimed landscape.
