More model informationFragment from Invermay Cross
The four fragments of sculpture displayed at Forteviot Church come from the Invermay Cross.
The base also survives in a field at Invermay, close to where it originally stood over 1,000 years ago. The cross was broken into fragments at the end of the 18th century.
The surviving traces of figurative imagery recall scenes on Constantine’s Cross. The size and solidity perhaps favour Invermay having been a cross-slab, similar to Gask, rather than a free-standing cross similar to Constantine’s Cross. The form suggests an 8th or 9th century date.
