The dreamy Bukolika
Bukolika sits relaxed on the banks of the river Isar, just after the pedestrian and bicycle underpass at Ludwigsbrücke in Munich, Germany. The sculpture by Martin Mayer looks as if it has just swum a lap in the river. And now it warms and dries itself comfortably in the sun. The word bucolic stands for rural, dreamy, peaceful, picturesque. For me, dreamy describes the Bukolika best.
The sculptor Martin Mayer celebrated his 90th birthday in January 2021. Born in Berlin, he has lived in Munich since the 1940s. You can also discover Mayer’s sculptures elsewhere in the city. For example, in the Olympic Park, where his powerful athlete “Olympia Triumphans” performs a perfect handstand. He also created the boar in front of the Hunting and Fishing Museum on Neuhauser Straße.
