Known as “Sajjadat Salat” in Arabic, a prayer rug serves as a clean surface that muslims pray on for their daily five prayers. From making mats of palm fronds that Prophet Mohammad had prayed on to the mass production of textile prayer rugs now, these mats hold symbols and stories among muslims. The old rugs that can be identified by their origin of tribe or community in history conveys so much cultural and artistic value. Designs of the mats vary as long as they do not distract muslims and still abide by Islamic values. Nowadays, people are attempting to invent advanced mats that can help muslims with health concerns such as when kneeling on the floor. Seeing how a prayer rug instrumentalizes as a form of comfort in the muslim community, it is an object that holds sentimental values within a household that can transcends to future generations.
