More model informationA fragment of an ancient Egyptian ivory apotropaic wand, almost certainly dating to the Middle Kingdom. The wand was excavated by John Garstang at the site of Abydos.
These ‘wands’ were a common feature in burials of the late Middle Kingdom. Usually carved out of hippopotamus ivory, they were often decorated with images of creatures that offered protection at birth and rebirth.
