James McGrigor Statue, ChiMed, Aberdeen3D Model
Sir James McGrigor (1771-1858. Dux at Aberdeen Grammar, he graduated MA from Marischal College (1888) before studying medicine. He was one of 12 students who in 1789 formed the Aberdeen Medical Society (later Medico-Chirurgical Society) to improve medical teaching. After a year of studies in Edinburgh, he graduated MD from Marischal (1804). He had a sterling career in military medicine serving in Flanders, West Indies, India, Egypt, Netherlands and Iberia. A meticulous record keeper, he was a pioneer in epidemiological research. His administrative prowess impressed Wellington and led to many changes in army medicine improving health and treatment of sick and wounded troops. Director General of the Army Medical Department for over 40 years, his awards included a Knighthood (1814), a Baronetcy (1831) and KCB (1850). After his death, a granite obelisk to his memory was built at Marischal and later relocated to Duthie Park, Aberdeen.
