This earthenware vessel is a Haji ware jar from the Early Kofun period, excavated from the surrounding moat of a hofun (square mounded tomb) measuring approximately 17.5 meters across. The rim of the jar is decorated with a mesh pattern bordered by a rod-shaped band of clay. The upper half of the body features both mesh and zigzag designs, while the neck and lower half are painted red. These characteristics indicate continuity with Late Yayoi–period earthenware from the southern Kantō region. For this reason, the jar is an extremely important artifact for understanding the beginnings of the Kofun period in Tochigi Prefecture.
