The wooden 178 ft steam barge John M. Osborne was built in 1882 and was lost in July 1884 in a collision with steel steamer Alberta off Whitefish Point, Lake Superior . Most of the crew scampered aboard the Alberta as the Osborn sank, but three of her crew and one hero would be rescuer from the Alberta went down with the ship while trying to save one of the crew who had been scalded by escaping steam in the engine room. The wreck now lies in 165 ft of water in the Whitefish Underwater Preserve and is one of the premier shipwrecks of the preserve. Features of the site are its unique double expansion steam engine and much other machinery, boiler and anchors. The model was created from 3,562 30 megapixel images shot by Andrew Goodman and Ken Merryman using a DPV mounted camera and lights to cover the site.
