The 216 ft wooden bulk freighter Joseph S. Fay was built in 1871 by Quayle and Martin of Cleveland, Ohio. In 1887 its single expansion steam engine was replaced with a steeple compound engine. In October of 1905 it was hauling a load of iron ore from Escanaba to Cleveland along with its barge D.P. Rhodes when they were caught in a Lake Huron storm near the Straits of Mackinaw. The Rhodes was cut loose to save the Fay. The Rhodes washed ashore and the Fay sank shortly thereafter. It now lies in 17 ft of water and is a popular dive and kayak site buoyed by the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The model was created from 1,882 30-megapixel images shot by Andrew Goodman on one DPV dive in the 2024 season.
