This Greek inscription was part of the monumental inscription in the arch over the stairway to the Upper Market from the Colonnaded Street at Petra. The inscription dates to AD 114, the time of the construction of new Roman road (Via Nova Traiana) by Emperor Trajan following the annexation of the Nabataen Kingdom into the Roman Empire in AD 106. In the bottom left, the inscription reads: “(Me)tropolis Petra (ип)трополі, петра)”, attesting that the city of Petra was recognized as Metropolis or ‘mother city’ of Arabia following the Roman occupation.
