Kahōkūwelowelo Heiau (Site NP-1) lies atop the rocky outcrop of a pu‘u on the north shore of O‘ahu. It overlooks the Kawailoa coastline, as well as traditional Hawaiian habitation sites NP-2 and NP-3. While the 75 meter long site has been heavily damaged by modern and historic modifications, the remains of terraces, stacked walls, enclosures, and paved areas still remain. These features provide important information about how the Heiau was originally organized and used. The ancient Heiau was modified during WWII when it was integrated into a coastal defense network designed to protect O‘ahu from invasion. The site provided searchlight support for the Ashley artillery battery (located 1.6 km to NE). The historic remains include three collapsed concrete bunkers and an intact searchlight controller booth, as well as several stacked walls and excavated pits.
