Originally a late Romanesque church with a floor plan in the shape of a regular Greek cross, with a pair of towers and an emporium on the west side, the Romanesque portal of the main - western entrance, another smaller Romanesque portal of the northern entrance and a Romanesque window located above it in the preserved section of the perimeter masonry. The church was built in the first third of the 13th century. The oldest Romanesque sacristy, still preserved today, was added to the northern wall of the church. The Romanesque church was three-aisled with a transept. Between 1462 and 1478, the church was rebuilt and expanded in Gothic style. In the years 1493 – 1499, the Chapel of the Zápoľský was added to the southern wall of the church in the late Gothic style, under which a crypt was built. In the second half of the 18th century, various baroque modifications took place.
In 1993, the Spišská Kapitula was registered in the UNESCO.
