The High Cross of Kinnitty (OF036-044004-), erected for the King of Ireland, Máel-Sechnaill, who died in AD 862. This cross is extremely important as it is one of only a small number with an inscription that not only helps date it, but also states who erected the cross and for whom.
At the bottom of the shaft on the face most likely the original front, or western face, is the inscription: OR DO RIG MAELSECHNAILL M MAELRUANAID OROIT AR RIG HERENN [A prayer for King Maelsechnaill son of Maelruanaid. A prayer for the king of Ireland]
On the opposite side, most likely the original back, or east face, is the inscription: OR DO COLMAN DORRO IN CROSSA AR RIG HERENN OR DO RIG HERENN [A prayer for Colman who made the cross for the king of Ireland. A prayer for the king of Ireland]
