In the heart of Győr, on Cathedral Hill next to the basilica, lie the remains of the early Árpád-era St. Lázár Church. The small Romanesque building was constructed in the 11th or 12th century and is considered one of the oldest sacred buildings in the city. After centuries of decay and the use of its stones for other buildings, the church was archaeologically excavated in 1981. This revealed foundation walls and pillar bases that indicate the presence of a gallery. The National Monument Authority preserved the foundations, which are now visible in situ. The simple architecture with a semicircular apse is typical of the Romanesque style, and the remains lie about 1.5 meters below the current floor level. A stone slab commemorates the excavation and restoration. The freely accessible site is a silent testimony to the early Christian history of Győr and connects the past and present in the historic center of the city.
