This is the largest carved rock currently stored at the private property of Kirkdale House (Kirkcudbright, Dumfries and Galloway). Please note access to this property is restricted. This shed stores 6 examples of prehistoric carved rocks and further two probably dating to the Early Medieval period. They were carefully arranged within a shelter, intentionally built to accomodate the carved stones and display very specific positions. Kirkdale House 4 is the central piece of this arrangement, flanked by the other carved stones. The composition of motifs in this rock surface is quite complex, including cup-and-rings, cup-marks, grooves and keyholes. On two edges of the stone, its surface suffered partial detachments, probably truncating the primary motifs. It is interesting to note that in both cases more carvings were made on the fresh surface, in one case attempting to complete the now destroyed motif.
