Kompleks monastyczny w Ghazali został wzniesiony pomiędzy 680 r. a 720 r. przez króla Merkuriosa, tego samego, który zjednoczył dwa północne królestwa nubijskie – Nobadię i Makurię. Było to założenie typu cenobitycznego, mnisi żyli, modlili się i pracowali razem. Poszczególne części klasztoru zostały przeznaczone tym celom. Życiu duchowemu służyły kościoły, spaniu dormitorium, produkcji posiłków młyn i prasa do oleju, spożywaniu posiłków refektarz. Poza tym w klasztorze znajdowało się specjalne pomieszczenie do przechowywania wody, toalety, jak również prawdopodobnie garbarnia lub pralnia.

This monastery was probably built between 680 and 720 by the fabled king Merkurios, who united Makuria with Nobadia. It was cenobitic, meaning that the monks prayed, lived, ate, and worked together. Clearly distinct areas served different purposes: churches for worship, dormitories for sleeping, refectories for eating, and a separate area for food production, with a mill and an oil press.
