More model informationA stomatocyte with two, or even more, invaginations is a knizocyte. I have seen knizocytes referred to as ovalocytes which in turn is sometimes used interchangeably with elliptocyte. As if that’s not confusing enough, a teardrop-shaped knizocyte may be a knizodacrocyte (this was in a paper about changes in erythrocyte shape associated with rheumatoid arthritis). Like elliptocytes, they result from changes in the amount and distribution of cholesterol in the plasma membrane.
