The Way of the Cross station in Unterlaa is located in Vienna’s 10th district. The wayside chapel from 1774 is the former second station of the Way of the Cross to Maria Lanzendorf. At the time, the wayside shrine was the second station on the Way of the Cross and pilgrimage route, which led from the south of Vienna to Maria Lanzendorf. The first station - which no longer exists today - was located in what is now Vienna’s 4th district. When the Way of the Cross was abandoned, the municipality of Unterlaa undertook to preserve the wayside shrine. The original picture “Christ on the Mount of Olives” was later replaced by a mosaic true to the picture. Both the picture and the mosaic feature a lightning bolt twitching out of the clouds as a symbol of the dramatic event.
